Narragansett Bay Budokai was founded in 2011 by Sensei Bobby Benner. Sensei Bobby is a 4th Degree black belt with over 20 years of martial arts experience. His passion for improving physical fitness, mental discipline, and spiritual strength is apparent in every class he teaches. Sensei Bobby has been a positive influence in the lives of many. His ability to reach children and adults alike has earned him the reputation as one of the state's best.

​​Sensei Bobby has been involved with martial arts his entire life. In his youth, he was taught the fundamentals of Shorin-Ryu by highly respected instructors in the area. He believes in a principled approach to martial arts, that includes the development of personal character as well as physical strength. His focus on respect, confidence, righteousness, discipline, and vision has made him one of the most sought after martial arts instructors in South County.  ​​

Senpai Steve Donnelly

Sensei John has been studying Japanese and Okinawan karate for some 40 years, starting as a college freshman taking a PE class in Shito-Ryu karate under Sensei David Crockett in Orange County California.  After graduating from the University of California, he continued studying Shito-Ryu for several years under Sensei Fumio Demura, then later studied various related styles for substantial periods as his business career took him across the country.  Since 2015, he has been training hard with us at Narragansett Bay Budokai learning the traditional Okinawan martial art of Matsubayashi-Ryu Shorin-Ryu.  

Senpai Steve started his journey a little later in life. Since 2012 he has trained at Narragansett Bay Budokai. Throughout the years, he has enjoyed helping out with classes. Steve started a year after his daughter, Keely, and together they received their black belts under Sensei Bobby. Every class he works hard to improve his techniques. Having been able to train under Sensei Juan Queris, Sensei Bob St. George, Sensei Bobby, and Sensei John 

Ben has been training in the martial art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for over 8 years and currently holds the rank of brown belt under BJJ black belt and mentor Danny Savery. Ben has experience instructing both adults and children at various Danny Savery NEU Brazilian Jiu Jitsu schools throughout Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts.

Sensei Bobby Benner

It is the goal of this establishment to work toward the betterment of the whole person; physically, mentally, and emotionally. We intend to accomplish this through diligent training to expand physical limitations, and honing and accentuating the specific strengths of each individual.

We study under Master Instructor Sensei Juan Queris, 8th Degree, owner/operator of Winter Haven Budokai, in Winter Haven, Florida. His journey into martial arts began in 1966 and he has continued his education and commitment to karate to this day. Sensei Juan is trained in Hapkido, Jidokwan Tae Kwon Do, Shobayashi Shorin Ryu, Chinese Kung Fu, in addition to Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu.
